4: Overview of project implementation
This chapter indicates how elements of the business case – such as the outcomes, requirements, communications strategy and governance arrangements – are applied during implementation to help achieve the planned business outcomes.
The previous chapter discussed the progress of a project to the point where:
- there is a clear definition of realistic business outcomes;
- project implementation for a nominated cost and timeframe has been assessed as feasible; and
- the project has been considered by the decision-maker; and if approved has effective controls defined.
These are important steps toward achieving the intended business outcomes.
The next step is effective implementation.
In many cases more detailed implementation planning is warranted prior to the commitment of significant resources.
It is also important for executives to understand the activities undertaken during implementation, so these activities can be correctly included in the project work plan, budget and timeframe contained in the business case.
Given the focus of this Guide on the planning stage, this chapter provides a high level overview of project implementation, and does not provide the same level of detail as in Chapters 2 and 3.32
