The Auditor-General, under the authority of the Auditor-General Act 1997 and other agency-specific legislation, is responsible for auditing the activities of most Commonwealth public sector entities.
The ANAO is located in Canberra, and has a small number of financial auditing staff located in Sydney.
The ANAO comprises two Services Groups (Assurance Audit Services Group -AASG, and Performance Audit Services Group - PASG) and two Support Branches (Professional Services Branch –PSB, and Corporate Management Branch – CMB).
AASG concentrates on the delivery of financial statement audits and PASG on the production of performance audits. PSB supports the delivery of these products by providing technical assistance to the audit groups, and CMB provides advice and services on a range of corporate matters to all areas of the ANAO.

A key element of the ANAO's corporate governance structure is the Executive Board of Management. The Board was established to provide leadership to the ANAO in achieving the objectives and strategies outlined in the ANAO's Corporate Plan, and to assist the Auditor-General to meet his statutory responsibilities under the Auditor-General Act 1997 and the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997. The Board is chaired by the Auditor-General.
A sub-committee to the Board is the Audit Committee, which functions as an oversight and review committee to enhance the ANAO's control framework and to improve the objectivity and reliability of externally published financial and other information. The Audit Committee is chaired by the Independent External Member.
