Financial Statement Auditor

“Believe it or not, auditing and variety can exist in the same job if you work at the ANAO. Audits here can be as different as chalk and cheese because we are responsible for all government bodies - such as the National Gallery, Defence, Centrelink and the Tax Office.

”Having to understand the nature and business of each client, means applying your toolkit of financial skills and abilities in a specific way for each audit, to achieve results. And developing working relationships with each of your clients adds to the variety. Some of our colleagues have chosen to spend years working on one of the larger clients in our portfolio. They say the sheer complexity of the big government departments offers its own variety. There’s always something new to discover.

”Auditing at the ANAO isn’t about pigeon-holing yourself in one particular area of finance or accounting. This is a role where you’ll need to apply and develop your broad based knowledge of different practices and theories. You need to love the detail, but be able to take the big picture view and enjoy the investigative challenge of finding the thing that doesn’t fit and then offering recommendations to fix it.”

Individuals in Team Member level positions undertake audits of a low to medium level of complexity, according to established plans – either individually or as part of a team. Main tasks revolve around the documentation of accounting systems and identification of key controls, conducting audit tests and drafting reports.

At Team Leader level, in addition to leading a small team and the management of discrete programs, you undertake more complex and higher risk audits. You are responsible for drafting audit strategies, the preparation of reports and discussing findings with clients. An additional important responsibility of this level is the development of more junior staff.

At Director level, you take on the responsibility for leading and managing a work area that is more strategically important, or of moderate to high risk. You are still involved in high level audit planning, investigation and reporting, project management, resource management and issuing audit opinions for less complex and lower risk level audits. However, you are also responsible for the development of your staff, and take part in the development of strategic solutions for the Assurance Audit Service Group, formulating business and operational plans. You’re also responsible for the management of client relationships, and the development of professional relationships with Parliamentary Committees, Client Audit Committees and other senior stakeholders.

At Senior Director (Audit Manager) level, you take on the responsibility for leading and managing work areas that are most strategically important, or of highest risk. You are still involved in high level audit planning, investigation and reporting, project management, resource management and issuing audit opinions for more complex and higher risk level audits.
