2.3.1 Where to begin

Understand your entity's ICT equipment profile and energy use

To understand their ICT environmental impact, entities need to know the amount of equipment they operate and how much energy it is consuming.

An assessment of the amount of equipment, energy consumption and equipment ratios will help entities to meet their reporting requirements and prioritise actions to improve environmental performance. The number of items of equipment and reams of paper used can be readily calculated from asset registers or procurement records. To measure and assess your organisation's total ICT energy use, a variety of ICT equipment will need to be metered or sampled. A sampling methodology is outlined in Table 2.1.

Note:

  1. Estimators are available on the ISAGA Govdex website. Email ICTSustainability@govdex.gov.au
  2. A high precision, plug-in power meter (available for less than $300) can be an effective tool to measure the power consumption of desktop ICT devices.
CHECK: Has your organisation determined the amount of ICT equipment it operates, and how much energy is consumed by this equipment?
