This audit would assess how the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) monitors and assesses outcomes for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants with autism, including to inform an understanding of the effectiveness of NDIS funded supports. The audit would also examine the effectiveness of the Department of Social Services’ (DSS’) autism programs to support improved outcomes, continuous improvement and NDIS sustainability.

Autism is the most common disability for NDIS participants and is the primary disability for 34 per cent of NDIS participants, of which 64 per cent are aged under 15 years. NDIS payments for participants with autism grew 23 per cent between September 2021 and September 2022.

The October 2022–23 Budget provided $5.3 million to DSS to support development of a national autism strategy.
