This audit would follow up on the Department of Education’s implementation of recommendations made in Auditor-General Report No. 18 of 2017–18, Monitoring the Impact of Australian Government School Funding and Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit (JCPAA) Report 476, Australian Government Funding.

The Auditor-General’s report made four recommendations aimed at strengthening existing accountability arrangements through improved data collection and analysis; increasing the transparency surrounding the allocation and use of Australian Government school funding; improving the monitoring of legislative compliance and the transparency over the use of Australian Government funding; and making greater use of available data to better understand the impact of funding on educational outcomes. JCPAA Report 476 made seven recommendations, including that the ANAO conduct a follow-up audit.

With an estimated $20.9 billion in funding to schools in 2019–20, which is forecast to increase by 21 per cent over the forward estimates, the audit would provide the Parliament with an update on how the Department of Education administers this funding.
