Commonwealth entities are able to access legal services from law firms on the whole of government Legal Services Panel or the Australian Government Solicitor (AGS), which is part of the Attorney-General’s Department. Certain legal work may only be undertaken by AGS. AGS has offices in every capital city and approximately 350 lawyers who cover some 40 different areas of law related to government. A potential audit would examine whether the AGS is effective in providing legal services, including assessing legal risk, within the Commonwealth.
