The ANAO could assess whether the conduct of the procurement for a National Police Check Systems Replacement (NPCSR) project employed open and effective competition and achieved value for money, consistent with the Commonwealth Procurement Rules. The NPCSR allows people to apply for a nationally coordinated criminal history check (previously known as a police check). Over 5 million checks are undertaken each year. Commencing with a market sounding process, the Australian Federal Police is conducting a procurement for a replacement system, with contract signature expected by the end of 2026.
